*sigh*.
Nimrod #2 was kind of a big deal for me. It’s not that I had to put a lot of work into it, or even print it for that matter. The big deal was what it means for me personally.
Printing the first issue of a zine is a big undertaking. You may not know what you’re doing, and no matter what, you have no way of knowing the direction that it is destined to go in. It could fall on its face. What you intend for it to become and what it inevitably does become could be wildly different. It’s a job you give yourself for no other reason than because you want to see it done. You put money into it. You put energy into it. You perfect it after many many failures until you think you’ve got something worth printing.
Then… you’ve got to get people to read it.
Printing the second issue of a zine… well.
After the first issue you can wash your hands of it, walk away knowing that it was something you tried and, for better or worse, you’re done with it. Committing to a second issue changes the game. Not only have you got to perpetuate something that you’ve started, you’ve also got to improve on it… bring more people in… get more people interested. You’ve gone from making a fun book to creating an entity. This is a commitment.
Not taking any of that into consideration at all, I decided to announce a new issue of Nimrod for October 2009. I already had a few short stories written, so for me it was all soliciting for content and designing the bastard. I faced a few challenges this time around, one of them being that I was working with writers in several countries, all with their own lives going on on their own schedules. Another challenge is that I had just moved to Vermont, and was committed to cranking out issues of Dear Deer Wolf Bear Shark for Brayton Cameron, on top of my own creative endeavors. All while trying to make a good impression at my new job.
It was telling that in my initial cover design for #2, I had already placed the date as “November 2009″.
Finally I got all of the stories together, slapped some bios in there, and wrote a little opener. some design tweaks, edits, and other messy nonsense later, and I was sending the pdf to Livius to print. You see, he was able to work out a seductively good price to get me printed. One I couldn’t pass up. And with the holidays approaching fast, I wouldn’t have to spend time in the office with Captain Printy printing it myself.
And thus, Nimrod #2 was born. Flash forward to today. I’ve distributed almost 70 of the original print run of 100 to places like: Vermont, Chicago, Seattle, Belgium, Norway, and have orders placed for England in the near future. Additionally, they will be available at Dear Deer Wolf Bear Shark’s “An Evening With Dear Deer Wolf Bear Shark” event in DeKalb IL on Saturday Feb. 13th.
If you’re hungry for some indie literature, email me at robb@thenwg.com or click the CONTACT tab at the top of this website. The issues are free – that’s right, I’m paying for postage. All I ask in return is to spread the word about this incredible literary experience.
